Chapter 1: The One Thing Needful

A man starts talking in an empty schoolroom about the facts, that facts are the one thing needful in the education and that his desire for the childrens is that they thought just facts.

Chapter 2: Murdering the Innocents

The man that was talking about facts, was called Thomas Gradgring, and he has established a school in the industrial city of Coketown. As he bielive, he hired a teacher named Mr. McChoakumchild and hopes that he only teach nothing but cold facts. Gradgrind visit the school and when he was there he asked a few students if the know that was a horse, especting an answer with a cold fact. Sissy Jupe, that was the doughter of a horse-riding circus entertrainer, didn´t know what to answer, but a pale young man called Bitzaer give him a cut and cold answer that pleases Gradgrind desire.

Chapter 3: A Loophole

When Gradgrind was walking back to his home, he saw his two eldest children spying on the circus through a hole in a fence. seem this gradgrind became furuious, because of his fact philosophy. He takes Tom and Louisa home. Louisa admits that she had curiosity, but she defended his brother and tell Gradgrind that she dragged him there.

Chapter 4: Mr. Bounderby

A boastful industrialist man who owns factories and a bank named Mr. Bounderby. He reminds mrs. gradgrind childhood and tell her that he was abandoned by his mother, he was born in a ditch and that he was raised by his alcoholic grandmother. when they were talking Gradgrind enters complaining to Bounderby about the children's misbehavior, on the circus, so Bounderby says that Sissy Jupe might be a bad influence, so they decided to expell Sissy of the school.
